Caring at Osler: Marlin’s Journey from Volunteer to Patient

Being a caregiver has always been at the heart of who Marlin Morrell is—as a proud mother, grandmother, retired teacher, and long-time volunteer at William Osler Health System (Osler), caring for others has been her calling. But when Marlin became the one in need of care, her perspective on the importance of compassionate caregiving deepened.

For over 35 years, Marlin has volunteered with Osler, welcoming visitors, comforting patients, and doing her part to ensure every person who walks through our doors feels cared for. “I was always the one offering comfort and compassion—until I became the one who needed it most,” Marlin reflects.

During a routine check-up, Marlin’s doctor noticed something concerning. After an ultrasound, CT scan, and biopsy, she received a life-changing diagnosis—stage 4 ovarian cancer.

“Suddenly, I found myself on the other side of care—no longer a caregiver, but a patient. While I’ve always known Osler has great hospitals, experiencing it firsthand gave me a new perspective. I saw the unwavering dedication of the physicians, nurses, and staff up close. Instead of offering support, I was receiving it—and it made all the difference.

“None of us are immune to life’s sudden changes,” Marlin says. “My own diagnosis came out of nowhere, but thanks to Osler’s quick diagnosis, made possible by state-of-the-art medical equipment, my treatment began right away, giving me the best chance of recovery.”

Osler hospitals face unprecedented challenges as we serve some of the fastest-growing and most diverse communities in the country. With increasing demand for specialized care, including cancer treatment, Osler is rising to the occasion with bold initiatives.

The planned Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre at Brampton Civic Hospital, the redevelopment of Peel Memorial into Brampton’s second full-service hospital, and investments in advanced medical equipment at Etobicoke General Hospital are all part of Osler’s commitment to transforming health care. These efforts ensure that patients like Marlin, and so many others, have access to exceptional care and life-saving treatments, close to home.
