April 20, 2020 - Donor Story, Stories

Inspired by the work of Osler’s frontline staff, esteemed Brampton business owner Sajjad Ebrahim and his family are matching donations of up to $100,000 to Osler Foundation’s Health Care Heroes campaign in support of the fight against COVID-19.

His donation comes at an unprecedented time as Osler also welcomed newly appointed President and CEO, Dr. Naveed Mohammad on April 13. Sajjad’s acquaintance with Dr. Mohammad spans several years and he felt compelled to honour Dr. Mohammad’s first week as CEO with a gift to his community hospital. “I first met Dr. Mohammad when he was the head of the Emergency Department (ED) at Osler and I was actively involved with the Muslim Friends of Osler group,” says Sajjad. Sajjad was impressed by Dr. Mohammad’s approach to running the ED with “compassion and incredible business acumen”. He feels that under the leadership of Dr. Mohammad, Osler will rise to even greater heights.

“Viruses know no borders, nor should our compassion”
Sajjad is now calling philanthropists and members of the community to step up and match his donation. “Those of us in a position to give have an obligation to step forward in these times of crisis,” says Sajjad. “What better way than to support the hospitals and the frontline health care workers—the heroes of our nation.”

Sajjad is hoping that others will follow his lead and spearhead similar initiatives across Canada. “Viruses know no borders, nor should our compassion,” he says. “Together, we can help provide the equipment Osler needs to fight COVID-19.” Funds raised will help purchase equipment such as ventilators, vein finders, vital signs monitors, stretchers and thermometers to aid frontline health care workers caring for those in the community.

Sajjad and his family are long time donors to Osler. In 2015, the family announced a gift of $2.5 million to Osler Foundation, making the donation the single largest donation from a family in support of Osler’s Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.

Now more than ever, your hospital needs your help. Vital life-saving equipment is needed to ensure that our hospitals can keep up with demand. Double your impact and support your #HealthcareHeroes with a gift today: oslerfoundation.org/covid19.
